Addressing the nation on the COVID-19 pandemic, Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasised the necessity of a self-reliant India. Much has changed in the new normal since the world is facing the pandemic and its after effects , so a perspective for self-reliance in science and technology (S&T) and industry in a globalised world is the need of the hour. Building an independent national economy means building an economy which is free from dependence on others and which stands on its own feet, an economy which serves one’s own people and develops on the strength of the resources of one’s own country and by the efforts of one’s own people. There are different kinds of economy around the world; some countries, typically those in the Middle East, put emphasis on extraction and processing of crude oil, some pursue economic development centred on developing tourist resources and relevant services, and yet some others push economic development by giving priority to the production of coffee or tea. Unlike these economies, a self-reliant economy is the one of laying a strong economic foundation of one’s own and using it to satisfy most of the needs of the nation’s economic development and the people’s living.
